Guthrie Blows Big Lead

The Orioles suffered their most criniging defeat of the year, blowing a seven-run lead in a 10-8 loss to the Boston Red Sox. In the opener of a four-game set at Fenway Park, the O’s were poised to secure an easy win by jumping out to a 7-0 lead, thanks to a seven-run second inning capped by a Nick Markakis grand slam. Jeremy Guthrie then uncharacteristically gave it all away, getting shelled for eight runs.

Guthrie gave up eight hits, including homers to Jason Bay and J.D. Drew, while walking four batters. Markakis’ grand slam was the highlight of the Orioles’ seven-run first inning off Brad Penny. Markakis added an RBI double in the fifth. He is hitting a blistering .359 with 15 RBI to start the season.

Minor League Notes: The Orioles removed top prospect Matt Wieters from his Triple-A game Wednesday night with an apparent hamstring issue. The Orioles say it was just a cramp and the move was strictly precautionary, but he is expected to be evaluated again today as Orioles fans hold their collective breath.

Even with that said and knowing that Wieters is the future of the Orioles offense, OI thinks Wieters should show he can dominate at the AAA level before they bring him up. What does that say about an organization to promote a prospect who is hitting .220?

Got something to say?
