Roberts Homers to Win
Brian Roberts (photo) hit a tie-breaking solo homer off Sean Green in the top of the eight to help the Orioles beat the Mariners 8-7 on Thursday. Roberts also singled and walked. The Orioles overcame a bad start from Adam Loewen by beating up on Seattle’s pen, scoring six runs off four relievers. Baltimore has now won six of seven games versus Seattle this year. The Mariners are 10-6 against everyone else. Adam Jones had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI against his former team. Jones stuck it to Seattle after being held to a couple of singles in eight at-bats in the first two games. His doubles were actually his first since April 10, and it’s the first time this year he had multiple extra-base hits in a game. The O’s bullpen did a tremendous job despite being forced into the game early, with five relievers holding the M’s to two runs in 6 1/3 innings. Jay Payton also homered for Baltimore, a solo shot in the fourth.
Loewen is dealing with forearm pain and is expected to be examined by team doctors today. Loewen said he has a constant dull soreness in his pitching arm that becomes sharper and more acute the more he throws. More on his status as it comes available. UPDATE: The Orioles announced today that they have placed left-handed pitcher Adam Loewen on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow soreness. Infielder Eider Torres was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to fill Loewen’s spot on the roster.
The O’s start a 4 game set with the White Sox in Chicago tonight. See you at the ballpark!
